What You Need to Know About Ring Resizing

Between fitting heirloom rings to your hands to adjusting your rings over the years or after a lifestyle change, resizing your rings might be the right choice. And, while some rings are easier to resize than others, rest assured that no matter the reason for the refit, our capable goldsmiths will provide you with the right advice.

Finding You A Better Fit

Why You May Want to Resize Your Ring

  • Comfort: The most common reason clients want to resize their rings is for comfort. When a ring becomes too tight, it can be uncomfortable or even painful to wear it for long periods.
  • Wearability: Like comfort, wearability is a common reason for ring resizing. When a ring is too tight, it becomes harder to wear day-to-day. And, if a ring becomes too loose, wearing it out and about can feel precarious.
  • Lifestyle Changes: As much as we might prefer otherwise, our bodies – and our fingers – do not stay the same size throughout our lives. Changing occupations, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and changes in climate can affect how your rings fit.
  • Preserving Heirlooms: Rings are a popular family heirloom. And, when those heirlooms don’t quite fit, it can be frustrating. Our goldsmiths work carefully on every piece they touch, allowing you to resize certain ring designs to fit your fingers.
  • How Does Ring Resizing Work

Evaluation: Every ring sizing starts with an evaluation. Our goldsmiths will assess the ring’s current size and ensure that the ring can be resized without significant risk to the integrity of the piece. Some rings – full eternity bands, rings with tension settings, and others – cannot be resized easily or safely. At this stage, our team will let you know whether resizing is a valid option.

Once it has been determined that the ring can be resized, we will work with you to decide the ideal size for your fingers.

Sizing Adjustment: The next step is the sizing adjustments. Two types of adjustments can be made to your ring to either enlarge the ring or reduce it.

If the ring needs to be enlarged, our goldsmiths will cut the bottom part of the ring (the shank). From here, they are able to add extra material to change its size. Using their years of experience and expertise, they will match the metal as they are best able and blend the additional metal into the rest of the ring. When done correctly, this addition will be undetectable by the naked eye.

To reduce a ring’s size, our goldsmiths will instead remove a portion of the ring’s shank as needed. If there are engravings or metal stamps on the inner band of the ring, the goldsmith will work hard to preserve these details.

Soldering and Finishing: After the adjustments are made, the shank will be soldered back together. The ring will be refinished as well to smooth out the appearance of the cut.

Polishing and Cleaning: Once the ring is properly resized, the piece will be polished and cleaned to ensure it shines as brightly, and beautifully, as before.

Things to Keep In Mind Afterwards

Get Used to the New Fit: A newly resized ring can take a bit of time to get used to. Your body is used to your ring fitting a certain way and, now that it has changed, the ring will likely feel odd to wear. We recommend waiting at least four weeks to allow yourself to adjust to the ring’s new fit.

When to See Your Jeweller: If the four weeks pass and the ring still doesn’t quite fit right, we do recommend coming back in to assess what other changes might be necessary for a perfect fit.
